Music Class for Homeschoolers in Downingtown, PA

Are you looking to have your child get credit for a music class as a homeschooled child in or around Downingtown, PA? Contact us for more information.

Why are offering music classes important for homeschooled children?

Learning general music offers many great benefits for young children. Through music classes, children develop a greater sense of cultural understanding because of their exposure to different musical styles, instruments and traditions. Musical exploration offers kids a healthy means of self-expression and boosts their emotional IQ. Through hands-on musical experiences, young children can develop certain transfer effect skills (skills indirectly related to playing music that have benefits in other areas of their lives). These skills may be related to focus, spatial reasoning, motor development and even literacy. Practicing music with students of similar ages sharpens a young child’s collaborative skills and develops their propensity for teamwork. These classes are great for stress reduction and engage young children in activities that harness their ability to appreciate and recognize the nuances of sound and composition. Why choose Downingtown Music Academy for music lessons?

Image of a girl completing a music activity My master’s level experience in music therapy and over twelve years of teaching children music make me the ideal candidate to help your child with general music instruction. This is a fledgling program and we only have a few students at our school who are homeschooled at this time but we hope to expand and help more families with their general music education needs.

In the past, PA law required parents to submit a portfolio of their work in a particular subject if they were homeschooled. Your evaluator may ask for samples of your student’s work. We will complete workbooks throughout our time together and may do small projects too, like making handmade instruments. If you need help with any statements required to submit your homeschool affidavit we are happy to comply.

What the class looks like

This class focuses on teaching elementary school children about basic musical foundations such as the musical alphabet, the staff, rhythms and instrument families. We will be discussing the lives of composers, learning about musical traditions and instruments from around the world and practicing short compositions and improvisations on instruments. The length of time that you would like to continue with these classes is up to you, but we suggest that elementary-age children will be the best fit for these lessons.
