Time to Compose Music and Write Some Songs!
Music theory and composition students are taught how to read music, about musical structure and how to apply these skills to songwriting. They are invited to listen to various composers to learn about past and emerging trends in music composition and find inspiration of their own.
- Students will be invited to improvise on the piano and record their improvisations.
- They will be taught how to sight-sing in order to learn how to notate any melodies in their head.
- They will learn how music has changed and been influenced throughout history.
- They will learn how to read lead sheets and use stylistic invariants in their playing.
- They will be provided with honest feedback and constructive help on their compositions.
- They will learn how the human brain processes music and how best to capitalize upon this process for the greatest audience appeal.

Music theory fundamentals structure the way music sounds and is perceived by the human ear. Understanding how to read music and analyze it is key to developing the skills needed to compose and play instruments.

Music theory and composition students receive instruction in reading sheet music, understanding musical structure, and applying these skills to the art of songwriting. They are encouraged to explore the works of various composers, both from the past and contemporary, to gain insight into evolving trends in music composition and to ignite their own creative inspiration.
Beginner Music Theory & Composition Lessons
Students will learn the basics of music theory and composition including reading musical staff notation, building and identifying key signatures and scales and identifying intervals.
Intermediate Music Theory & Composition Lessons
Students will continue to explore the world of music analysis and harmony building/melody writing. They will have the opportunity to improvise on the piano and document their improvisational pieces. They will also receive guidance on sight-singing, enabling them to notate melodies directly from their thoughts.
Advanced Music Theory & Composition Lessons
Throughout their studies, students will explore the evolution and influence of music throughout history. They will become proficient in reading lead sheets and incorporating stylistic elements into their playing. Constructive feedback and support on their compositions will be readily available.
In addition, students will delve into the fascinating realm of how the human brain processes music, learning how to leverage this understanding for the greatest audience impact.
