Adult Piano Lessons in Downingtown, PA

Piano is one of the most rewarding instruments to learn as an adult. You can start from nothing, you can play the music you love, and you can enjoy the results quickly. At Downingtown Music Academy, adults of every level take piano lessons with patient, background-checked teachers.

It's Not Too Late to Learn Piano

You don't need to read music or have touched a piano before. Your teacher starts where you are, and builds your skills at a pace that works for your schedule. If you played as a kid, we'll help you pick it back up.

What Adults Learn

  • Reading music, including the two staves piano uses, step by step
  • Songs you love, from classical to pop
  • Technique for relaxed, accurate playing
  • Basic music theory, chords and how songs are built
  • Sight-reading, so you can pick up new music on your own

Your First Months

Your first lesson is a trial lesson: a $20 deposit that goes toward your first month, with one free reschedule. Your teacher will ask what you want to play and why, then build a plan around it. Early lessons usually focus on reading, hand position and a few simple pieces so you can start enjoying the piano right away.

How Much Practice Do You Need?

Short and regular beats long and rare. Even 10 to 15 minutes most days adds up faster than one long session a week. Your teacher will help you set a goal that fits your schedule.

Piano or Keyboard at Home?

You'll need an instrument at home to practice. A piano takes space, needs regular tuning (at least once a year), and should sit in a room with steady humidity. A keyboard costs less and fits almost anywhere. If you're offered a free piano, check its condition first, especially if it's been in a basement or garage. Our blog post how do I find the right piano? has more, or ask your teacher before you buy.

Lessons That Fit Your Schedule

Many of our adult students take afternoon or evening lessons. Online lessons are available too, at the same price. If you'd like more time with your teacher, 60-minute lessons are an option.
