School Band Instrument Lessons in Downingtown, PA

Joining the school band is a big step, and private lessons give new players a big head start. At Downingtown Music Academy, Hannah Fleury teaches flute, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet to students starting at age 8, and she can help with the music your school band is playing.

Band Instruments We Teach

Two saxophone students with alto and tenor saxophones at Downingtown Music Academy
  • Clarinet: Hannah's strongest instrument. It's versatile, found in concert bands, orchestras and jazz bands, and the skills carry over to other woodwinds.
  • Flute: a bright, light instrument that rewards good breath control. Students bring their own flute.
  • Saxophone: a popular choice for band and jazz. Beginners build fundamentals like holding the instrument, reading notes, breath control and tone.
  • Trumpet: a bold brass instrument, great for kids who like a strong, clear sound.

Hannah also teaches trombone, oboe and French horn. Oboe and French horn students need to bring their own instrument. Call us to ask about these.

What Age Can Kids Start Band Instruments?

We start flute, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet at age 8. That's about when many schools begin their band programs, and it gives kids the focus and lung capacity for a wind instrument.

Choosing an Instrument for School Band

Your child's school will usually tell you which instruments the band needs. If your child has a choice, think about what sound they like, how they'd feel about the way the instrument is played and what instrument you can get. If you're not sure, a trial lesson is a good way to try one out. Our post on choosing the right instrument can help.

Help With School Band Music

Hannah can work from your school band music in lessons, so students walk into rehearsal ready for what they're playing. Bring the music your child is working on to their lesson.

Rentals and Buying an Instrument

Many families rent a band instrument at first. We don't recommend a particular rental company. Your child's school music teacher is a good first stop, and we're happy to help you work through it case by case. If you're thinking of buying, ask us before you do, since a poorly made instrument can make learning harder.

What a First Lesson Looks Like

Your child's first lesson is a trial lesson: a $20 deposit that goes toward your first month, with one free reschedule. They'll learn how to hold the instrument, how to form an embouchure (the shape of the lips and mouth that makes the sound), and how to play their first notes. Bring your own instrument if you have one.
