Perhaps you have been wondering "Should I learn the saxophone?" Let's take a look at some pros and cons to the instrument, and how to get started.

Pros of Playing Saxophone:

  • Beginner friendly instrument. It is easier to pick up and start learning music compared to other instruments of the woodwind family.
  • Versatile across genres of music including jazz, rock, blues, and classical.
  • Aides in development of lung capacity, diaphragm strengthening, and breath control.

Cons of Playing Saxophone:

  • Cost of instrument, accessories, and maintenance can be high compared to other instruments.
  • The saxophone is kind of heavy. So a neck strap or harness is required to hold the instrument upright.
  • Inherently a very loud instrument. It can be bothersome to family and neighbors

Reading and Motor Challenges

Alto saxophone music uses the treble clef and your typical rhythms (like any other instrument). As for motor challenges, people with small hands may struggle. It can be hard to reach the keys and buttons if you have small hands. The saxophone can also cause strain on the musician's right thumb. There is a small thumb rest on the back side of the instrument that requires your right thumb to anchor the instrument so that it can be secure enough to play. After long practice sessions, the thumb can get tired or even a little sore.
