Pros of Playing the Flute:
- Flutes are lightweight and very portable. It can be broken into to smaller pieces for a compact case.
- Unlike its woodwind cousins, the flute does not need a reed in order to produce sound. So musicians can save a little money from that additional cost.
- Large versatility in ensemble playing. Flutes are featured in marching bands, concert bands, symphony orchestra, some jazz bands, and folk music.
Cons of Playing the Flute:
- In order to produce sound on the flute, a precise embouchure (mouth shape) is needed. It may take some time, practice, and a lot of patience to master the correct mouth placement.
- The flute is help horizontally (parallel to the floor) when played. This position can cause muscle fatigue or soreness over time.
- It can be difficult to project sound, when in an ensemble setting, while playing against brass or percussion counterparts.

Along with a difficult embouchure, or mouth shape, students may find challenges with finger dexterity when playing the flute. Air speed, mouth shape, and differing finger combinations are what is used to create different notes. Being able to memorize finger combinations, having a good aural skill, and breath control are all what is needed to find success in playing this instrument.
