What Kids Learn First
- How to hold the sticks and use good technique
- Basic rhythm patterns and keeping steady time
- Reading simple drum notation
- Coordinating hands and feet
- Simple beats and grooves from popular music
Younger students also learn through rhythm games and creative play, so lessons stay fun.
Where They Learn as They Grow
As students progress, lessons move on to more complex rhythms and time signatures, better limb independence, and improvisation and soloing.
Practicing at Home: What to Get
Most kids don't need a full drum set to start. A practice pad and a pair of sticks go a long way, and they're quiet. An electronic kit is a quieter alternative to an acoustic set if you want something closer to the real thing. Before you buy, ask your child's teacher what would work for your home and budget. Our studio practice room has a drum set for lessons.
Will It Be Too Loud?
It doesn't have to be. Pads and electronic kits keep the noise down, and short practice sessions at a set time of day help everyone in the house. Our teacher can help you plan a routine.
