Guitar Lessons for Kids in Downingtown, PA
Kids love guitar because they can learn songs they already know. At Downingtown Music Academy, children as young as 4 can start guitar lessons with background-checked teachers who keep it fun. Lessons are in person at our studio or online.
What Age Can Kids Start Guitar?
We start guitar at age 4. At that age, lessons are short, playful and focused on getting comfortable with the instrument. Older beginners work at a pace that fits their age and goals. Not sure if your child is ready? Call us and we'll talk it through.
Teens and adults who are just starting out can also see our beginner guitar lessons.

Acoustic, Electric or Classical for a First Guitar?
For most kids, an acoustic or classical guitar in the right size is the best place to start. Nylon strings on a classical guitar are easier on small fingers. Electric guitars are fun, but they also need an amplifier and cables. Children need smaller sizes than adults do, and you can expect to spend anywhere from $50 to $200 on an instrument. Ask your child's teacher before you buy.
Very young children sometimes start more comfortably on ukulele, which is smaller and has fewer strings.
What Kids Learn First
- How to hold the guitar and place their fingers
- Basic chords and strumming
- Reading simple music, tab or both
- Songs they like, so they stay interested
- How to accompany themselves while singing
Keeping Young Players Motivated
Younger students use practice charts and earn a small reward when they reach their goals. Our Practice Space app tracks progress and keeps practice resources in one place. Playing for family and friends at our recitals gives kids something exciting to work toward.
"Our daughter has been taking guitar lessons for several months, and she has fun learning music from Rosalind. She looks forward to her weekly lessons, and was very excited to perform at her first recital."

Private or Group Lessons?
Most kids start with private lessons, which give each child full attention. Group lessons are also available and cost less per student. Ask which option fits your child.
